Researching topics

Today we met at the library in room 105, and we talked about our topics.  So each group said their topics.  Dr. Berg told us that most of them were pretty broad, so he told us to make them more specific.  Then he sent us to research them.  My group’s topic was the Massachusetts Bay, from there we split it up into subcatagories.  Mine was the interaction between Native Americans and Puritans.  Sadly i couldn’t get a computer to look it up so i went to look it up in some of the books in the library but i ended up helping my group members find their books.  Also it was kinda hard to find things in like 20 minutes maybe if i had more time i could have something but oh well.

I have drafted a blog entry about how crowed the library was yesterday. I plan to post it in my blog tomorrow. If you subscribe to my blog, you will be notifed as soon as it was posted. Otherwise, I will mention it during our next class.

Twenty minutes is too short of a time to find much information on a topic. But the purpose of this activity was to learn how to find information about how to narrow down a broad topic. It is a quick exercise designed to build a skill and to introduce students to some issues concerning early America.

In the future, we will do some similar exercises where you will be part of a team who selects a topic. However, the purpose of those later exercises will be to learn the skill *and* learn more about the topic. In those cases, more class time will be given. Also, there will be an expectation that some research will be done as homework.
